Prospect Profile: Javier Baez

Javier Baez may be young, but not short on talent. Prior to the start of Spring Training the consensus opinion was that Baez would, at best, be a late season call-up. Well, that was before  Baez absolutely caught fire, using his incredible bat speed to hit 5 HR’s in 13 games with a nice slash line of .308/.308/.769. Check out this mammoth shot..

“But still”, you may say, “Starlin Castro is obviously blocking him at the major league level, there’s no where for him to play.” Besides the fact that Castro’s bum hamstring may prevent him from being ready to start the season, the Cubs have played Baez at 2B in their most recent Spring game. Couple this with the recent news that the Detroit Tigers are pursuing a trade for Cubs 2B Darwin Barney , and you can start to see a clear path open up for Baez.

If on the off chance he makes the opening day roster, Baez is an extremely hot commodity. He will have SS eligibility and presumably would gain eligibility at 2B early in the season. His power production is immediately real he is a guy who could put 30 out of the park this year. He does strike out a lot, but with that kind of bat speed (Constantly compared to Gary Sheffield) he is a scary guy to go up against.

Even in re draft leagues, Baez is already worth end game consideration in any draft. If he plays 120 games this year, will be a top tier MIF.

And now just for fun check out one more mammo shot from Mr. Baez!
